End of an Era, Beginning of a New Chapter – WMHK Sold

WMHK-logo-family-friendlyThis has been heavy on my heart since I first read the email and press release.

89.7 WMHK was owned by and a ministry outreach of Columbia International University. CIU has sold WMHK and its sister stations, WRCM 91.9 in Wingate, NC and WRZM 88.3 in Boiling Springs, NC to Educational Media Foundation, which operates the K-LOVE Radio Network. CIU President Dr. Bill Jones said, “CIU will be in a stronger position to focus on its core purpose of educating students from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ.” The official press release is below with more details about EMF, K-Love and the history of CIU and the stations.

WIS has confirmed that all 7 staff members at WMHK have been “laid off” and will receive severance packages. Neither WIS’s report nor the press release say when the staff’s last day is or when the last day of broadcast for WMHK will be.

WMHK will not be joining us at Lexington Mommy Expo. (But we will absolutely keep their logo on everything.)

My personal two cents? Pray for the staff and the families of the staff. I can’t imagine this is a walk in the roses for them. Pray for the local ministries that WMHK worked with and helped. Pray for the expansion of K-LOVE to continue to reach people in the Midlands through the music, both veteran listeners and new listeners.

I just keep thinking about the local outreach of the WMHK staff – helping local ministries, building relationships with listeners and businesses, the local events like the Lauren Daigle concert the other night at Radius church, so many “boots on the ground” local things. And it makes me incredibly sad to see this chapter end. But I know God’s plan is bigger than my current thoughts and keep trying to remind myself of this.

I can not say “thank you” enough to the staff of WMHK! They were one of the first “big companies” to take a leap of faith, support Lexington Mommy and jump on board with us and our events. They have always been amazing to us! Their support was huge for our first expo, Babies and Bumps and has been wonderful for this year’s expo. As a matter of fact, Babies & Bumps was born out of a conversation with two staff members. They’ve always been so good to us! And I’ve grown to truly love their staff as I’ve worked with them. They are such good people that just make your soul feel happy. I will forever be grateful for them and to them!

I would love for y’all to leave a comment with a word of thanks to the staff or a special memory of how WMHK and their staff has touched your life. I think it would be a nice gesture as the staff begins new chapters in their lives and as Columbia enters a new chapter of Christian outreach on the radio in Columbia.

Thank you, JP, Michelle, Jeff, Kelly, John, Mike and Julie! We love y’all!

I really hate to hear this as my family and I listen to your station all the time . In the morning we listen while taking our girls to school. You all have some great stories about your kids and I pray that God is doing the right thing for all of you and something will come your way for you all and your family . May God bless you all

I am sad to hear this. All of you will be in my prayers. Your station has been a blessing to our family. It’s the only station we listen to in our car. I’m honestly about to cry. Praying for each of you as I know you will be blessed financially and blessed with a better opportunity.
