DIY – Laundry Detergent

By  |

Many moms I know are moving toward making their own stuff – household things, health and beauty products, arts and crafts products, you name it. Whether it’s for health reasons or financials, the list of “make it yourself” products is growing among moms. Now you can add laundry detergent to your list! This recipe makes A LOT!

image1 Box of Super Washing Soda 3 lb. 7 oz.
1 Box of Borax 4 lbs 12 oz. size
1 Box of Pure Baking Soda 4 lb.
3 bars of Ivory Soap
1 container of Oxy-Clean 1.3 lb

You can buy all of this from Wal-Mart for right around $20-$25. I know that sounds like a lot, but it makes 18 lbs of laundry detergent. EIGHTEEN POUNDS! And you only need 1-2 tablespoons per load!

Chop then grate the bars of Ivory Soap until they are a fine texture. Mix grated Ivory Soap bars and all of the rest of the ingredients in a large bucket lined with a bag … think giant 5 gallon bucket. Mix and stir well. Then you can pour out some into a smaller container to keep close to the washer. Works WONDERFULLY!!

In this batch, Fels-Naptha bars were used instead of Ivory
